According to a report from Billboard, 50 Cent is currently embroiled in a civil lawsuit stemming from an incident last summer where he was videotaped throwing a microphone into the audience during a concert. The lawsuit was filed by Los Angeles-based radio host Bryhana Monegain, who alleges she was hit by the flying mic and suffered "severe and permanent injuries."
Monegain, a host at Power 106, filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles court on Thursday, accusing 50 Cent (also known as Curtis Jackson) and concert promoter AEG of negligence. The incident in question occurred during a performance by 50 Cent at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, as part of his Final Lap Tour, on August 30. The rapper was seen in viral videos throwing the malfunctioning mic offstage in frustration.
Monegain, who shared images of her injury on social media, alleges in her lawsuit that the flying mic struck her in the face and wrist, causing significant harm. The incident, which was part of 50 Cent's performance, was captured in viral videos that show the rapper discarding the mic, then later throwing another mic into the same area.
“Plaintiff was transported by ambulance to the Los Angeles General Medical Center emergency department for treatment of injuries, including but not limited to, a concussion, laceration over her forehead, and pain in her left wrist,” her lawyers write. “Plaintiff complained of dizziness, headaches, light and sound sensitivity, and nausea [and] continues to suffer from her severe injuries and emotional distress.”
While the viral videos do not show the mic hitting anyone, Monegain was seen in social media photos with a head wound that she claimed was caused by 50 Cent's mic. The lawsuit filed on Thursday is a civil matter, separate from any potential criminal charges. Monegain reportedly filed a police report on the night of the concert alleging criminal battery, but court records show no charges were filed.
In a statement, 50’s lawyer Scott Leemon told Billboard that “Curtis would never intentionally strike anyone with a microphone.”
Monegain's lawsuit claims that 50 Cent and AEG had a duty to ensure the safety of the audience, including herself. She asserts that they "failed to create a safe environment for attendees," pointing out that 50 Cent should have been aware of the potential danger of a performer throwing a microphone into a crowded area.
The filing does not state an exact amount of money Monegain is seeking, but asks for “past and future wage loss, hospital and medical expenses” and other unspecified “general damages” over the harm she allegedly suffered.
